Bare Hunt Collective presentsMUNTED Directed by Kate McGill Performed by Victoria Abbot, Frith Horan and Jackie Shaw
With acclaimed seasons already in Wellington (selling out BATS Theatre), Dunedin, Queenstown, Wanaka and, of course, Christchurch, Bare Hunt Collective finally arrives in Auckland with their acclaimed verbatim documentary, Munted, at The Basement Theatre studio from December 4th.
“The three skilled actors are able to showcase their characters without costumes or special effects, each comfortably slipping from one persona to another with great dexterity” - - Robert Gilbert.
Based on the February 22nd Christchurch Earthquake, Munted draws from the personal experiences of TV Reporters and the community of Christchurch a month following that fateful day; everything you hear on stage is 100% verbatim from the 15 people interviewed. These are the 15 people that Jackie Shaw, Victoria Abbott and Frith Horan embody onstage – from a 4 year old boy, to a Grocer’s wife to a cameraman covering the earthquake on television.
Specifically made from a recent event in New Zealand history, Munted’s objective is to value and encourage story-telling in the community, and following each performance is a forum creating an opportunity to facilitate discussion with members of the NZ public.
Bare Hunt Collective is an emerging theatre company with proven success. Their first show BACK/WORDS premiered at BATS Theatre as part of the Wellington Fringe Festival in 2010. BACK/WORDS was then chosen from 88 shows as ‘Pick of the Fringe Festival’ and awarded a professional season at Downstage Theatre Wellington.
Stories of loss, peppered with humour and perspective on one of “our worst national tragedies” are told in direct speech. Munted finds laughter amongst grief and a strengthened community in the heart of the shaken city.
“I truly believe MUNTED is a show as many New Zealanders as possible should see. This earthquake didn’t just affect the people of Christchurch…it affected us all. We all felt their grief, their stories. This play is phenomenal and Bare Hunt’s almost sold-out Wellington season proves this is something we want to see” - Matt Mclean, TVNZ.
