Basements new schools programme!

Posted on March 20, 2015 by Basement

The Basement is excited to announced the launch of our brand new Schools Programme. It’s a sweet sah-weeet initiative designed to assist secondary school teachers and students in their learning – full of shows, activities, and workshops. We want to develop relationships with young people because they are the future artists and audience members of the Auckland creative arts scene. THE FUTUUUUUUURE IS NOOOOW!

The Schools Pilot Project is a smaller scale version of the programme, and nominations are now open! We’re selecting five schools to participate this year – simply fill out the online nomination form here. Schools will be selected based on their passion for the performing arts, availability to commit to the project, and their desire to connect to The Basement community.

We kicked off the programme last Wednesday following a performance of Renee Lyons’ award winning show Nick: An Accidental Hero, to give schools a taster of what’s in store for this year. Our studio was crammed full of students from Onehunga, Western Springs, Mount Roskill, Mangere, Tangaroa, and Nga Rangatahi Toa. And it was awesome! Check out some of the comments on our response wall:

Having received some initial seed funding from a private donor, our aim is to use the pilot to attract financial partners, develop relationships with schools, and support from the community.

So what is the Schools Pilot Project? Check the deets below:

The programme: The pilot consists of three pre-selected shows, with additional opportunities available for workshops with our artists.

It’s FREE: All tickets to the shows are free for participating schools in order to keep the programme accessible.

Discussions and workshops: Every performance concludes with a post-show discussion with the artists. This is a space to respond to the work, ask questions, and engage in a conversation directly with the performers.

Stand-by tickets: Students at participating schools can attend any of The Basement’s evening shows for free.

Off-site performances: Schools have the chance to host a performance right in their own hall, theatre, or classroom.

Transport: As well as the tickets, we want to subsidise all transport to and from the venue, so that our friends from far away can come too!

The shows for this year are:

Directed by Jennifer Ward-Lealand

Written by Bronwyn Elsmore

Performed by Fasitua Amosa, Toby Leach, Kerry Warkia, and Luanne Gordon.

By Ben Wilson

Directed by Ryan Knighton

By Amelia Reynolds and Saraid Cameron

We are committed to ensuring we create opportunities for schools to participate and express, access cool theatre, and create long-lasting connections with our community at The Basement.
