Language and Silence

Leaping into the nature of language, linguistics and love Precious Little is a dark comedy exploring the power of words and what we must create when they’re lacking.

Ahead of opening night, Jonty talked linguistics, gorillas and more with Dawn Glover - producer and member of the show’s creative company, Navi Collaborative:

HOW DID THE SHOW ORIGINATE?

Every year our Navi core sits down to dream and scheme. The deal with our company is that we take turns supporting one another's passion projects. Courtney, our newest member, pitched Precious Little to us as her potential project. She told us that she loves Precious Little because it combines her two great passions, linguistics and theatre. We read the script (written by American Playwright, Madeleine George) and all felt like this is a show that we would love to work on and bring to an Auckland stage.

WHAT CAN WE EXPECT FROM THE SHOW?

You can expect a beautiful exploration of language and silence, of the way that humans connect and disconnect in a jumble of consonants and vowels. You can expect deep and powerful acting that will reach out and pull you into the world of Precious Little.

IN TERMS OF LINGUISTICS AND GORILLAS, HOW MUCH RESEARCH WAS INVOLVED?

As we didn't develop this play we don't know the extent of the research that Madeleine Gorge must have done as she wrote this, but each of the actors and their director dove deep into exploring all the ins and outs of the language that Cleva speaks (even down to what her accent would sound like after years of living in NZ), all the information around the test that Brodie takes and the chromosomal defect that the baby might have, and of course there were hours of research and rehearsal devoted to the development of our Gorilla.

WHAT REACTION ARE YOU HOPING THE SHOW GETS?

Our goal is always to reach out through our art to inspire thought, questions, and action. We would love to see people leave Precious Little more conscientious of the way that they are communicating in the world; we would like to encourage our audience to find that when you strip away all the words you find that in true connection there is so much more than Precious Little.

Precious Little is on at Basement Theatre from 29 May - 02 Jun. Book tickets or find out more here.
