The Watercooler - Issue #55: No But, Where Are You Really From?

The question that some people just love to ask, and others hate to hear.

No but, where are you really from?

The question that some people just love to ask, and others hate to hear.

This March The Watercooler is bringing you stories all about that question. It’s a hard question, usually a stupid question – a question that can box in, belittle or label. It’s a question of legitimacy, and of culture, heritage and history. But what is it like to be on the receiving end of it? Buckle up as Gemishka Chetty, Ankita Singh and Sandra Zvenyika bring you all their hot take on being and belonging as immigrants in New Zealand.

Issue #55 is hosted by Marianne Infante, Auckland Theatre Awards Outstanding Newcomer of 2011. She is a proud Filipina who moved to Christchurch at age 11, before moving to Auckland in 2014. Her theatre experiences include As You Like It, Emotional Creature, Rumination, and Aroha Mai. She is one of Proudly Asian Theatre's producers, creating a platform and opportunities for Asian-NZ creatives in Tamaki Makaurau.

Inspired by many well-known storytelling events held worldwide (The Moth, This American Life), The Watercooler is a platform for people from all walks to tell stories both true and imagined. Storytellers are given a simple brief to share a story inspired by the month’s theme, whether based on real-life experiences or entirely fictional.
