Introducing Mele Ta’e’iloa, the CNZ & Basement Theatre 2025 Pacific Producer in Residence

Creative New Zealand and the Basement Theatre are delighted to announce Mele Ta’e’iloa (Lotofoa, Ha’apai, and Kolonga/Holonga Tongatapu) has been selected as the 2025 Pacific Producer in Residence.

The residency is a pilot initiative developed in partnership between the Basement Theatre and Creative New Zealand to deliver outcomes under the Pacific Arts Strategy 2023–2028, to help grow professional and industry skills for Producers in theatre and dance towards national and global presentations and touring of Pasifika productions.

It’s an opportunity designed to support mid-career Pasifika producers who have had some international touring experience.

As part of the pilot, Mele will work closely with the Basement team for two months, gaining hands-on industry experience at a busy established theatre in the heart of Auckland central. She will have the chance to grow her industry networks, learn how venues operate, and make connections within the Tāmaki Makaurau arts sector.

She brings over a decade of experience as a director and producer across education, community, and dance, both locally and globally. A proud daughter of South Auckland, Mele currently serves as Producer for Projekt Team, a Street Dance collective guided by the kaupapa ‘People First, Dance Second.’ The Projekt team recently toured the Pacific Islands, offering workshops and street dance performances to local communities and gaining valuable touring experience.

“My producing practice has been shaped by my background in Hip Hop dance and Pasifika culture. The residency’s commitment to mentoring and elevating Pasifika voices aligns with my purpose as a producer: to build creative futures where our people lead from the centre. I’m at my best when supporting artists to bring their visions to life,” says Mele.

Izzy Robinson, General Manager, Basement Theatre, is positive the residency will help Mele make the necessary connections and learnings.

“We’re excited for Mele to join the Basement whānau. For two months, she will have the space and time to focus on her development as a producer – something that’s rare when you’re constantly creating for others,” says Izzy.

Dr Michelle Johansson, Chair Basement Theatre, is thrilled with the partnership with Creative New Zealand.

“The partnership with Creative New Zealand is about creating long-term outcomes for Pasifika leadership in the theatre space. We’re proud to be a part of an initiative that creates space for producers like Mele to develop their practice and feel supported within the industry.”

Ali Foa’i, Manager Cultivation, Pacific Arts, says the partnership with Basement theatre aligns with key focus areas under the Pacific Arts Strategy 2023 - 2028 including Tagata (leadership development) and Vaka (skills development).

“The partnership also aligns with strategic priority areas to strengthen strategic partnerships and collaborations. And we want to thank the Basement team and board for hosting the resident producer and co-designing this new opportunity with Creative New Zealand,” he says.

Mele will begin her residency in September.
