These prices may vary from time to time, such as for NZ Intl Comedy Festival or our annual Christmas show.

It’s 2023 and life is pretty expensive. Along with putting cherry tomatoes in salads, attending live performance will soon become a seriously elitist sport if we’re not careful. At Basement we want everyone to get their healthy dosage of live performance, so this year we’re taking some bold steps to make that happen.

We are introducing our new ticketing scheme Choose What You Pay - and its fire. It gives the power to everyone that wants to see a show to decide how much to spend on their ticket. Ticket prices start from $8 and go up in $1 increments right up to $100.

Choose What You Pay tickets are for everyone, every night. For participating shows, Choose What You Pay is the only ticket type to choose from and it applies to all performances in the show’s season.

Feeling stuck at what price to choose?

Choose What You Pay gives you the freedom to decide what to pay to see a show at Basement. But sometimes freedom can be… overwhelming? If you are feeling stuck, here are some ways to think about your choice of what to pay for your ticket.

  • Firstly, there are zero judgements for whatever price you choose and we won’t ask any questions. We mean it! We want you to pay the price that you want to choose.

  • Your role as a ticket purchaser is an important one, and it is bigger than one transaction. In the background, there is a brilliant interconnected eco(nomy)-system at play! Because some pay a little more, it means more people get the opportunity to see the work at a cost that won’t bring them - or the artist - increased financial stress. Everyone is a part of this live performance rainforest.

  • Because you have the power to choose, we see you now not just as the audience, but as ‘partners’ who are involved in the artwork. Your choice to come to see a show and what you pay is an offer to the artist. For some, a manageable offering might be a few dollars and a standing ovation. For others, it might be a significant payment that quietly makes a big difference to the artists’ income and overall sustainability.

  • If you donate to charities regularly, you could also look at your ticket purchase as a pseudo-donation. Could independent artists of Tāmaki Makaurau be a new cause you support? Love that for you! In one transaction, you could give to artists as well as a night out for yourself.

Want to bring a friend, but want to pay different amounts?

With Choose What You Pay, we want to meet you where you are, regardless of whether you are coming to the show alone or in a group. If you want to add multiple tickets to your booking at different prices per ticket, simply move the slider along to the first price, select the number of tickets you want at that price, and then add them to your cart. You will then need to go back to the event and slide along to the new price, select the number of tickets you want at that price, and then add these to your cart as well.

Basement Theatre doesn’t offer refunds and all purchases are final. This is our policy as each show’s ticket sales go directly to the artist and they depend on ticket sales for their livelihood. With such limited seats available, the artists would lose out if we offered refunds.

If you find yourself unable to come to a show, firstly we encourage you to pass your ticket(s) on to someone else. If that does not work out, please contact iTicket on 0508iTicket or support@iticket.co.nz to transfer your ticket to another night. Please do this prior to the show commencing.

No worries! If you've lost your iTICKET email, we can email you the PDF of your tickets again, just send us an email at info@basementtheatre.co.nz, or our friendly box office staff can print your ticket again for you on the night.

Please arrive at least 15 minutes before the show start time. Latecomers are admitted into the theatre at Basement's discretion and lockouts may apply. No refunds will be given.

Unfortunately we don't offer waitlists in advance for sold out shows. If you would like to put your name on the waitlist you can do so by visiting Basement on the night of the performance and leave your name with our box office staff. You will need to be at the venue at the performance start time and tickets are subject to availability and not guaranteed if your name is on the waitlist.

All Basement shows are General Admission, if you would like a specific seat the best thing to do is show up at least 15 minutes before the show start time so you can head into the theatre when the doors open.

If you require a specific seat for accessibility purposes, just get in touch with us at info@basementtheatre.co.nz and we can organise a reserved seat for you.
