SUMMER AND PRIDE SUBMISSIONS ARE NOW OPEN

We are wildly and ecstatically delighted to invite submissions from independent practitioners and companies to be part of Basement Theatre’s 2024 Summer/Pride season. Nau mai, haere mai e te whānau!

We’re looking for submissions of full-length works (45-70 mins) for either the Theatre or Studio.

PRIDE @ BASEMENT

In 2024, Auckland Pride Festival runs from 1-29 Feb (all month long babyyyy!) and Basement has been aligned with this festival for many years.

Last Feb, we saw a plethora of Pride delights at Basement including bawwwdddy from the Luxurious House of Givenchy, Reon Bell’s (Ngāti Whitikaupeka/Tūwharetoa) queer exploration through the medium of alien abduction, Adam Rohe’s earnest transition story, SADBOI’s radical stage vulnerability and of course the LOLGBTs of No Homo.

In 2024, we want to take Pride @ Basement to the next level. So we’re calling on all Takatāpui, Queer and Gender Diverse artists to submit their mahi, take up space and celebrate their stories at Basement. We would be honoured for you to bless us with making our whare, your whare for the 2024 Auckland Pride Festival.

Especially for Pride, alongside our traditional 5 night seasons we're interested in one-off events that might take place in any of our spaces (bar included), including DJ nights, community gathering in some form, visual or video art installations, and anything else that feels aligned to our kaupapa.

Here’s Auckland Pride Festival’s Creative Director Nathan Joe:

"For Auckland Pride 2024, we are looking to artists who inspire us to build worlds or break them. Artists who help us imagine a better tomorrow or challenge us to rethink what today should look like. We want to see our communities reinvent or rectify the stories that we tell ourselves and each other. We want works that encourage alternative ways of being and remind us the road to utopia is never a straightforward one."

This statement from Nathan (a long-time member of the Basement whānau), will guide our programming decisions for the Pride portion of our Summer/Pride 2024 season.

SUMMER @ BASEMENT

After Pride, the fun continues with the Summer season carrying on through March until the end of April.

As usual, we’re looking for work that continues the legacy of Basement being a home for urgent and adventurous live performance made by brave, independent artists. That’s you!!

We especially want to see subs from:

🔥 Emerging practitioners who are committed to creative exploration and/or building a career in the arts, as well as established artists wanting to explore something new or extend and hone their practice and craft.

🔥 Māori artists making adventurous work

🔥 Work from other ‘Vital Voice’ communities - we want to take a focused and sustained approach to supporting all marginalised communities so in addition to Tangata Whenua we would love to hear from People of Colour, queer communities, immigrant communities, and disabled people.

🔥 New work from Aotearoa.

🔥 Artists with practices that prioritise the well-being of their artists, collaborators and audiences.

If you have any pātai, send an email over to Todd, our Programmes Navigator, todd@basementtheatre.co.nz  and Vira our Artist Champion, programming@basementtheatre.co.nz. We’re ready and waiting to hear from ya.

Submissions close for Summer/Pride 2024 on Wednesday 27 September 2023.

We're sending lots of love to you and yours, and we're so looking forward to seeing what you send our way!! 💗 💗💗

Kia ora mai,
Basement Theatre xx
