F.O.L.A [AKL]: RETURN - Fleapit

Show Info

Meet and play with the disturbingly comforting creature FLEAPIT inspired by Basement’s queer past, present and future.

Fleapit is the centerpiece of our Festival Hearth, outside Basement. An unruly, guttural, queen of the night, she spills and splays her long and tangled limbs to embrace her fellow night owls. If she's dropped her ciggie, be sure to pick it up for her.

“Fleapit” is a site specific response to ‘The Theatre’ as a place where dramatic performances happen mixed in with the building’s past life as a gay night club in the 70s. I imagined the night club as a haven for colourful peoples, much like how it functions today. For this show I will reimagine and assemble characters to greet and mingle with our guests.” - Tyrone Te Waa

One of Aotearoa's rising visual arts stars, Te Waa has delighted audiences with his methods of assembling, wrapping, binding, stitching, linking, covering, concealing, knotting, tangling and fastening. The processes and materials he uses have dual roles -- both a reference to shelter and stability, and more bodily connections such as bone and skin.
