Kia ora Basement Artists!
Hey so we know it’s a bit hideous to talk about Christmas-related things in March (gggrrrossss) but we’ve got some news and we think you might be interested… This year we have decided to select the makers of the 2023 Christmas Show via an open callout! Do you love Christmas? Do you love to make hilarious shows and perform them for weeks on end? You do?!? Then keep reading!

Since the very beginning of Basement Theatre’s existence, our Christmas Show has been one of the most important events in our year. It brings people from all over Tāmaki together under one roof for some stupidly festive sentimentality, to laugh uncontrollably, and to let it all hang out after a year of hard work and triumphs. It’s a special thing, it’s unapologetically silly, and many of our city’s finest artists have graced the Basement Theatre Christmas Show stage and made it what it is.

The Christmas Show is also a really important fundraising exercise for Basement. The money made through ticket sales is crucial to us balancing our books and slowly making improvements to the way we do things. In 2023, the money we raise through the Christmas show will help us to pay our staff and artists in accordance with industry rates, and will also support us to make Choose What You Pay and Hire-For-Nothing possible.
In selecting the makers of this year’s Christmas Show, we want to make sure that we are reaching out beyond our own bubble… maybe there’s a group of artists out there that we haven’t thought about who would just LOVE to take up this challenge.
