VIVID DREAMING
Show Info
Vivid Dreaming, is a vibrant contemporary dance double bill by Jawline Dance Collective. Co founders Carla Harre and Jess Crompton will restage two works: Others and Puffy Sob, which premiered with incredible success in its own Auckland season in early April 2022. This show is a collection of human experiences and issues set in the abstract worlds of our subconscious. Both works are wildly different in pace, movements and ideas, yet hold a similar tone.
Puffy Sob, choreographed by Jess Crompton, is a duet performed and collaborated on by Sharvon Mortimer and Celia Hext. A montage of relationship waves and lulls envisaging our warped perspectives and how vastly different they can be. Throughout the work we get to pry into the private lives of two people in an intimate relationship. Though interpretation varies, it is important to note that the work is rooted in queer love and queer experience.
Others choreographed by Carla Harre is a trio featuring collaborators Oli Mathiesen, Cade Hansen and Lulu Qiu. This piece is about people that are in an inbetween state. We ask the audience to question the performers’ true nature, witnessing them as soulless beings yet full of a past life. We see the dancers undergo different modes of an ‘afterlife’ and follow them on journeys of belonging, finding themselves, and to finding each other. It features fluid movements, harsh shapes, intertwined with exuberant versions of self.
"Bodies entwined... satisfyingly whimsical." (Puffy Sob)
"Moments of serenity drawn into a jittery tension and back again." (Others)
